In Sharon Olds’s poem “The One Girl at the Boys’ Party,” Olds uses an extended mathematical metaphor to convey an adolescent girl’s attempt to understand her newly emerging sexuality, which contradicts the logical, math-oriented identity she has known for herself until this point.  Olds also uses imagery throughout the poem to help support this idea.
